United States: Wyoming’s only full-service abortion clinic is set on fire by a woman. She has now been given an order to pay nearly $300,000 in restitution, the full amount sought by prosecutors.

What is the Case?

The clinic Wellspring Health Access was set to open in Casper in 2022. Just before that could happen, Lorna Green set it on fire, who is now serving five years in jail. The fire destroyed the building while it was being renovated for the new clinic and delayed its opening by almost one year.

Green expressed guilt for the crime and described her action as being driven by anxiety and nightmares about the clinic. A mechanical engineering student from Casper College, Green had never shown anti-abortion views on social media. However, during the investigation, she expressed her remorse for abortion, ABC News reported.

Wellspring, after its opening in past April, was then the only abortion clinic in Wyoming.

How was the crime conducted?

According to her, she drove from Laramie to Casper, where she broke into the clinic through a door and set fire by soaking gasoline in trays and pouring it on the floor.

As per the report by ABC News, after many months of not much progress, investigators increased the prize to US$15,000 and finally got tips that led to Green’s arrest in March.

The orders by the court

US District Judge Alan Johnson ordered Green, 22-year-old, to pay about US$298,000 in restitution including US$240,000 to Nationwide General Insurance Company, the clinic’s insurer, on Tuesday.

Green must also pay US$33,500 to the building’s owner, Christine Lichtenfels, and US$24,500 to Julie Burkhart, founder and president of Wellspring Health Access. Burkhart conveyed satisfaction with the restitution.

Burkhart said, “Not only did we have the emotional struggle and that trauma from the arson but also it was quite challenging for us financially. So, I’m glad this is the final piece and it has been put to rest.”

Green pleaded guilty in June to arson and in September got the minimum prison sentence, in which she had to face up to 20 years in prison, as per the report by ABC News.

Banning of abortion law in Wyoming

The news laws in Wyoming seek to ban abortion in nearly all cases when the arson and eventual opening of the clinic happened there. However, the laws and the country’s first direct ban on abortion medicines, have been put on hold by a judge because of a lawsuit filed by four women and two nonprofits including Wellspring Health Access.

After hearing the arguments in a court case on December 14, Judge Melissa Owens of Wyoming District is considering making decisions about these laws. She would probably be challenged and make Wyoming’s laws about abortion go to the state Supreme Court, ABC News reported.
