Botulism Threat Leads to Nationwide Recall of Snapchill Canned Coffee

United States – About 300 varieties of ‘canned’ coffee sold across the United States are being recalled due to the presence of botulism, according to the FDA.

The affected canned coffee was produced by Snapchill LLC, a Wisconsin company that has decided to recall the product after realizing that its manufacturing process could result in food poisoning, which might be lethal, as reported by The Hills.

Botulinum Toxin Risk

The recall alert says the manufacturing process “would ultimately lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods.”

The canned coffee was conveniently accessible through different coffee roasters and shops, and it could also be purchased online from the Snapchill official website.

This was discovered when the FDA wrote to Snapchill for information only to tell them that their method of manufacturing was not filed with the FDA, which is mandatory. They have not heard of any illness from the coffee and do not know of botulinum toxin existing in Snapchill. Snapchill is still making moves to ensure that it submits the correct notification to the FDA.

Botulism a kind of food-borne illness may lead to muscle weakness, difficulty in speaking or controlling the muscles needed to swallow food, double vision and dizziness. This may come hand in hand with other symptoms such as breathing issues, weakness in other muscles, distention of abdomen and even constipation. Diagnosis of botulism can be done from the onset of symptoms within six hours to 2 weeks after consuming food containing botulinum toxin.

According to the CDC, anyone with such symptoms should not hesitate to go to medical doctors.

What to look for:

As noted by the FDA, the recalled products were offered under different roasters and brands and in different metal can packaging forms, ranging from 7 to 12 ounces.

“These products can be identified by the words ‘Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC’ written below the nutrition facts panel. Some of the products will have ‘Snapchill Coffee’ inscribed on the label,” the alert goes, as reported by The Hills.

More details of the recalled products are given here.

According to the FDA, the coffee cited must either be disposed of or returned to Snapchill or the place where it was bought to obtain a refund.
