AstraZeneca Faces Legal Action Over Covid Vaccine Side Effects

United States: In a revelation within legal documents, AstraZeneca acknowledges for the inaugural instance the potential of its Covid vaccine to induce rare adverse effects, paving a path for substantial legal reparation, as per The Telegraph’s report on Sunday.

The gaming juggernaut has recently been facing litigation in a collective action regarding the hypothesis that severe damages and even death were caused by the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by the University of Oxford under a partnership arrangement. This vaccine was reportedly connected to TTS (Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia syndrome), which includes clotting events and decreased blood platelet levels, according to media reports.

AstraZeneca, which formed a partnership with the University of Oxford, developed the AZD1222, commonly referred to as the COVID-19 vaccine, after the emergence of the coronavirus in 2020. SII, which was founded by the Serum Institute and worked under a year of contract from the academic institute and the Swedish-British pharmaceutical concern, continued the same earlier model and mass-produced the vaccine as an offering called Covishield in economically developing countries, including India.

The Telegraph noted that although the company bitterly contested the lawsuits, the High Court were informed in a legal submission of February that AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine can, and in rare cases do, result in thrombosis thrombocytopenia (TTS).

Lawyers from the AstraZeneca legal team argue that the AZD1222 vaccine had been wrongfully stigmatized and their efficacy results were maltreated. AstraZeneca representative denies the described allegations.

With 51 cases pending in the High Court, plaintiffs and bereaved families seek reparations amounting to an estimated £100 million, the report discloses.

The inaugural lawsuit was initiated in 2023 by Jamie Scott, who sustained enduring brain impairment subsequent to experiencing a clot and cerebral hemorrhage in April 2021 following vaccination. In a rejoinder dispatched in May 2023, AstraZeneca conveyed to Mr. Scott’s legal representation that “we do not concede that TTS is an inherent consequence of the vaccine.”

Kate Scott, Mr. Scott’s spouse, remarked to The Telegraph, “The medical fraternity has long acknowledged the vaccine’s role in VITT (vaccine-induced immune thrombosis with thrombocytopenia). It’s only AstraZeneca that has cast doubt on the connection between Jamie’s condition and the jab… It’s taken three years for this acknowledgment to surface. It’s a step forward, but we anticipate more transparency from both AstraZeneca and the Government. It’s imperative for proceedings to expedite,” certain reports claimed.

“I trust their acknowledgment will expedite resolution. Our family, alongside others affected, deserves an apology and fair recompense. Truth is on our side, and we’re resolute,” Kate asserted.

‘Upholding patient welfare remains our paramount objective.’

Sarah Moore, a partner at the law firm Leigh Day handling the legal proceedings, commented, “In light of this, it’s regrettable that AZ, the Government, and their legal representatives seem more inclined to strategic maneuvers and escalating legal costs than earnestly addressing the profound repercussions of their AZ vaccine on our clients’ lives.”

AstraZeneca, in a statement, expressed, “Our condolences go out to individuals who have suffered losses or reported health complications. Safeguarding patient welfare is our foremost priority, and regulatory authorities enforce rigorous standards to ensure the safe utilization of all medicinal products, including vaccines,” reports mentioned.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the vaccine was deemed “safe and efficacious for all individuals aged 18 and above,” with the adverse reaction prompting legal recourse being classified as “exceedingly rare.”
