US health authorities warn of rising flu threat, potential surge in RSV infections

United States: The health authorities of the United States have shared a warning about the increasing threat of flu across the country. The authorities have further announced that it is believed that RSV infections can also witness a surge among the kids and older population.

While emphasizing the third respiratory infection – COVID-19, the head of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – Dr. Mandy Cohen, explained that there are chances that hospitalization and death could remain continuous. According to the stats shared by her, as many as 15,000 people are hospitalized and 1,000 people die weekly because of the increasing cases of COVID-19.

In addition to this, some reports also claimed that the health agencies are also monitoring the reports related to the pneumonia outbreak among the children. However, CDC head Cohen outlined that “there is no evidence” that they are due to anything unusual, the reports by news agency Associated Press noted.

State-wise spread of flu, RSV

While emphasizing upon the spread of flu across the United States, the report suggested that around seven (7) states reported high levels of flu-like illness in early November. However, the latest report by the CDC – released on Friday, underlined that the tally has gone up to 11 states, and the majority of the states were from the South and Southwest.

In regard to RSV infections, the reports claimed that a sharp increase was witnessed in some parts of the United States, resulting in the filling of emergency departments of hospitals in Georgia, Texas, and some other states. Moreover, Cohen said, “But we think we’re near the peak of RSV season or will be in the next week or so.”

The Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, shows symptoms similar to the common cold, but it can become dangerous for infants and older people.

Increased pneumonia cases in the United States

As per the reports by the Associated Press, Cohen shared details regarding increasing pneumonia cases in Massachusetts and Warren County in Ohio. It is to be noted that health experts have expressed concerns that the increasing cases of the disease may complicate the cases of COVID-19, flu, and RSV.

According to the stats shared by the officials, Ohio has registered around 145 cases since the month of August. Additionally, it mentioned that the majority of the patients were cured at home. The experts suggested that the illness was caused because of an attack by a variety of common viruses and bacteria.

On the other hand, the health officials of Massachusetts informed that there is a modest increase in pneumonia in the state.
