United States: A mysterious condition – named Kawasaki disease is on the increase across the United States. The healthcare experts are concerned because the infection primarily attacks children under the age of five (5).

The Kawasaki disease results in attacking the heart of a younger individual – which can lead to acquired heart disease; however, the disease is generally undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

What is exactly Kawasaki disease?

Kawasaki disease is rare, as per various health authorities; however, the United States has been witnessing an increase in cases linked to the infection.

Several reports have mentioned that Kawasaki disease is one of the leading pediatric mysteries, as no one exactly knows the source of its emergence. The disease is also known as KD. The disease has left the experts divided as some have mentioned that the disease is caused as a result of environmental exposure, whereas some state that it occurs after a bacteria or viral infection, according to the New York Times.

In addition to this, some health experts have also suspected that certain genes make children prone to the disease.

A decline in Kawasaki disease during the pandemic!

According to several health experts, during the time of the pandemic, the cases related to Kawasaki disease were decreasing, and in this regard, certain health experts have mentioned that precautionary measures such as social distancing and masking would probably have protected the children from the exposure.

However, now that COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, the children have been getting infected with the virus. Health experts have also hinted that most of the children – who are getting infected with the disease – are being exposed to the same for the first time.

How does the infection affect the human body?

Health experts have highlighted that the acute phase of Kawasaki disease can last for weeks, then it revolves on its own – if treatment is not given to a patient. But health experts have also highlighted that the infection directly attacks the blood vessels – causing swelling and even damage in the heart muscle and valves, as per the reports by the New York Times.

If the heart arteries of the children are inflamed and not detected, they might form bulges called aneurysms in the artery walls. This can increase the chance of blood clots and heart attacks.

If kids with Kawasaki disease don’t get treated, about 25 percent of them might end up with swollen blood vessels near their heart called aneurysms. This can be really serious, leading to heart problems or even death, even after several years, according to the reports by the New York Times.

In addition to this, some health experts have also mentioned that if a child is suffering from Kawasaki disease, then the parents must consult a Kawasaki disease specialist.
