United States: The Golden State of California is now under the threat of avian flu, which is also known as bird flu, as more than three million birds (3,000,000) have been euthanized.

The number of cases has been quadrupled since the first reported outbreak in Sonoma County, according to the reports by ABC7. At the time of the beginning, as many as 250,000 birds were put down.

How has bird flu affected the locals?

It is to be noted that Petaluma City in California is known for producing eggs, and a resident of the city, named Mike Carriotti, stated that the “eggs have always been great at Mr Mom’s Café.”

He further outlined that eggs are always a hit in the busy kitchen of the Café. Another person, named Craig Gronning, was quoted saying, “This used to be the egg capital of California, at least, for growing chickens and eggs.”

Though while raising concerns, they outlined that the scenario has changed post the outbreak because of avian flu.

Outbreak at Sonoma County

According to the official data, around US$50 million of the poultry industry of Sonoma County has been hit by the avian flu outbreak. The intensity of the flu is really hard, and it has euthanized around one million birds.

In this regard, the executive director of Sonoma County Farm Bureau – Dayna Ghirardelli, said, “It is really devastating. It’s crippling our entire poultry industry in Sonoma County.”

The information by ABC7 revealed that the crisis because of the flu has just seen an upward trend, and since Thanksgiving week, several local poultry producers have euthanized chickens and ducks due to the fear of the avian flu.

According to the details by the health authorities, Sonoma County has dealt with two more outbreaks last week. While addressing the same concern, Ghirardelli mentioned, “There’s going to be an effect on the market. We’re going to see eggs that are not available in the market. We may see the price of eggs increase.”

Further, he added, “In the Bay Area, there are a lot of wonderful restaurants that rely on local duck production and ultimately, right now, that production has completely ceased.”

Meanwhile, Carriotti stated, “I was shopping here at Lucky in Petaluma and they had no eggs — not an egg on the shelf,” as per ABC7.

It is to be noted that to assist the Liberty Ducks Family Farm – the major provider of ducks for many Bay Area restaurants- financial support has been pouring in.

The California Poultry Federation outlined that the data, showing the statewide loss in the last two months, is shocking and heart-wrenching. The president of the Federation – Bill Mattos, said, “California, we’ve probably lost over three million so far — egg layers, chickens, ducks, turkeys.”

In addition to this, Mattos took a note to explain the ways to protect birds during such a crucial time. “The farms are locked down. We don’t let people in and out of the facility,” said Mattos, according to ABC7.

Furthermore, the authorities of the California Poultry Federation underlined that the poultry producers have indeed taken extra precautionary measures for the safety of birds. However, there are important warnings to backyard chickens.

According to ABC7, “People who own backyard chickens can be wiped out even if they only have five chickens, so they’ve had to make sure every day when going into their backyard, they have clean clothes, clean shoes, clean everything. Otherwise, that can spread to the neighbor, etc,” said Mattos.
